How to Use Magic Select in Paint 3D

Just like Adobe Photoshop and other advanced editing tools, Magic Select in Paint 3D helps you remove unwanted objects from photos quickly. Whether you need to make a fast photo fix or create YouTube thumbnails, Magic Select can do the job without you having any premium software.
What Magic Select Can and Can't Do
Magic Select is a built-in tool in Paint 3D that can be used to remove any object from a photo while also auto-filling the background where we made the changes. But it can cause performance issues if dealing with a cluttered or detailed background. It works great on 2d images, but edge selection can fail on a detailed background. Use it as a free photo editing app provided by microsoft but it cant fully compete with software like Photoshop
1) Prepare These in Advance
You must already have your photos ready, either in PNG OR JPEG. Also make sure Paint 3D is pre-installed; if not available, you can download it from here
Open a Blank Canvas or Import Photos
- Right-clicking your image file in your PC folder and choosing “Edit with Paint 3D.”
- If you start from the app itself, click Menu then Browse Files to import your picture.
- Resize the canvas accordingly, then use the Crop tool to frame your subject
Use the Magic Tool to Draw a Rough Outline Around the Object
- Click Magic Select.
- Try to adjust the select handle options as close to the object as everything that comes under the blue outline will be selected
- Click Next.
Refine Your Selection
- If Paint 3D misses spots, click Add and drag over the missing area.
- If it includes too much, select Remove and swipe out the extras.
- Repeat until the missing space looks clean at the zoom level you’ll export at
Work with the Selected Object
- Once selected, drag the object off the canvas to see the Autofill background result.
- If you want to remove an object, let Autofill run often it does the job, but still check properly
- Use the Undo / History tool to revert and retry if Autofill looks wrong.
- You can resize, rotate, or paste the cutout into a new image then use Bring Forward to layer it.
Finish and Export in Paint 3D
- File → Save As → Image → PNG (image) and check Transparent background.
- For web performance, convert exported PNGs to WebP images when appropriate.
Tips, Limitations, and Troubleshooting
Paint 3d is not the best at dealing with detailed backgrounds, but we still have some methods for you to go around it
- Zoom & refine: Run Magic Select again with a tighter rectangle
- Select smaller pieces of the object in sequence and remove them one by one.
- Use Paint 3D’s brushes to blend small artifacts or re-run Autofill on the remaining area.
