Paint 3D Not Working: Complete Troubleshoot Guide

The fixes mentioned below are the ones I’ve personally tried on Windows 10 and Windows 11 . Whether you’re dealing with constant freezes, missing projects, or the app won’t even open, these solutions actually work.

Issue 1) Paint 3D frequently crashes on Windows 10/11 with error messages

When Paint 3D crashes randomly during mid-project, it’s usually one of three things: drivers, you didn’t install the app correctly, or you downloaded it from an unsafe source. If you need a clean installation, download Paint 3D from here

Solution 1: Fix the Outdated Graphics Driver

Press Windows key + X → open Device Manager.

Expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.

If Windows doesn’t find an update, visit the GPU vendor (NVIDIA / AMD / Intel) and download the latest driver for your model. That’s the step I prefer direct from the source.

Restart PC after updating. If problems persist, roll back the driver from Device Manager (right-click → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver).

Solution 2: Fix the Corrupted Files

Press Window then write cmd and run it as administrator
Then Run: sfc /scannow wait until it finishes.
If SFC reports issues it couldn’t fix, run these:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After this restart your pc and hopefully your issue will be resolved

Solution 3: Repair and Reset the Software

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Find Paint 3D, click the three dots, and select Advanced options.
First, click Repair. Test the app.
If it still crashes, click Reset. Warning: This will clear the local data.

Solution 4: Reinstall Application

Your issue should be resolved by now from the above steps, but if not, then try reinstalling the application
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Uninstall Paint 3D.
Then reinstall it from here

Solution 5: Run Windows Compatibility Mode

Right-click Paint 3D shortcut → Properties → Compatibility tab.
Tick Run this program in compatibility mode for: → try Windows 10
Click Run this program as an administrator as well. Apply and test.

Issue 2) Paint 3D is not responding and freezing frequently.

Sudden Not responding errors or freezing often occurs during mid work when RAM or CPU spikes, or any other background apps using extra resources

Solution 1: Close the Background App

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → open Task Manager.
Look in Processes for high memory or CPU apps
Right-click → End task for anything you don’t need.
Try to save your work frequently so you don’t face a sudden loss of your project

Solution 2: Run the Microsoft Store App Troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot
Other troubleshooters → Windows Store Apps → Run
Then restart.
note: This will only resolve the problem if tied to the Microsoft Store’s app

Solution 3: Clear Cache Files

Press Windows Key + R and type wsreset.exe, then hit Enter. This tool cleans the Microsoft Store cache

Issue 3) Performance issue

Sometimes the paint 3d software itself starts feeling sluggish or slow when applying textures usually, our system here is the bottleneck

Solution 1: Check RAM and Free Storage

Task Manager → Performance → check RAM and CPU usage.
Free up space by using Disk Cleanup.
For low RAM systems, close other apps

Solution 2: Update the Graphics Driver

Go to Device Manager → Display Adaptor → Update the graphics driver.

Issue 4) Paint 3D deleted all the Projects.

Sometimes you find few of your projects missing from paint 3d menu to recover those follow the given steps

Solution 1: Recover Projects from Local App Data Folder

Open File Explorer → View → show hidden items.
Navigate to : (Local Disk → Users → [your user] → AppData → Local → Packages → Microsoft.MSPaint_8wekyb3d8bbwe → LocalState → projects).
Look for PROJECT.JSON or PROJECT.JSONxxxxx.TMP files. Copy them to a recovery folder.
If PROJECT.JSON is 0 bytes and a TMP file contains data, follow Solution 2 below.

Solution 2: Restore from TMP Files via JSON Editor

Open the TMP file in a text editor. You’ll see JSON arrays like
[ProjectA, ProjectB].
Open PROJECT.JSON, it may contain []. Paste the TMP content inside the brackets, comma-separate entries. Save as PROJECT.JSON.
Restart Paint 3D. Your projects should reappear.

Solution 3: Try Third-Party File Recovery Tools

Download a reputable recovery tool (Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery).
Run a deep scan on the Local Disk. Look for recently deleted PROJECT.JSON / TMP files.
Recover to a different drive, then open recovered JSON in Visual Studio.

Issue 5) Paint 3D is unable to create new projects.

If Paint 3D doesn’t show create projects option, it’s usually because permission isn’t granted, or problems with the Microsoft Store framework.

Solution 1: Reset the Software

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Paint 3D → Advanced options → Reset.
Move any existing project files from AppData to another folder before resetting. As it is crucial or you will lose your data permanently

Solution 2: Update Windows

Windows Update → Check for updates. Install any pending updates.

Issue 6) Paint 3D not opening at all after clicking the icon

If clicking the icon does nothing, the app might be blocked or not registred

Solution 1: Run Paint 3D as Administrato

Right-click Paint 3D shortcut → Run as administrator.

Paint 3D has been discontinued from the Microsoft Store in 2024. Many websites offer unsafe or malicious download links, so always choose a trusted source.
